Chisholm’s Debbie Hodges – Teacher of the Month – presented by the med spa at enid live well

By Ember McElrath

Debbie Hodges always knew she wanted to be a teacher, but didn’t take the plunge until after her first son was born.

“I was amazed at how he learned and what a sponge he was,” said Debbie. “I also knew that I wanted to be a part of my children’s education.”

Her first teaching assignment was at Tonkawa middle school. She was there for four years teaching sixth grade English, gifted and talented, as well as starting the middle school student council. In 2000 they moved to Weatherford Texas and she taught seventh grade English as well as doing some coaching and yearbook advising. In 2009 they made the move back to Oklahoma where she started her high school teaching career and currently remains and has been the NHS co-advisor for the past 11 years.

“The best part of teaching, obviously, is working with kids as well as other adults who love working with kids,” said Debbie. “There is no better accolade than a student remembering something you taught them or a book they devoured in your class!”

Her inspiration to work hard and be the best teacher she can be comes from her amazing daughter.

“She is so intuitive and perceptive about her students’ needs and their issues,” said Debbie. “They are all her favorites, but she nurtures each one with just the right individual attention they learn and grow from.”

Having a great principal is also a great motivating force for Debbie.

“Shane Dent inspires me with his selfless service to our kids and their well-being,” said Debbie.  “He is nothing but patient and strives to not only get to know people, but to understand their motivations.”

In Debbie’s free time she enjoys gardening, reading, and playing with her wonderful granddaughters. She also enjoys hiking, traveling, and spending time with family.
