Kingfisher’s Katey Brickman – NWOK area athlete spotlight – presented by integris hennessey medical clinic

by Derrick Smith

There is a lot of work that goes into being a successful athlete, no matter what level of competition they compete at. Kingfisher senior Katey Brickman says that while the physical competition is important, it’s not the only way she prepares for competition.

“There is a lot that factors into being good at golf,” she said. “You have to be mentally prepared to shake off bad shots and not let that affect the rest of your game. You have to put in extra hours and most importantly be confident in your game.”

Brickman is the fourth bag on the Kingfisher High School golf team. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and the 4-H Trap Shooting Team.

Throughout her life, Katey says that there have been a lot of people that have made an impact on her. But she says that her mom is definitely the biggest role model in her life.

“She has always been there for me,” she stated. “When I am down, she encourages me to do best in everything I do.”

Katey still holds onto some advice that she was given some years ago and it is something that she will hold on to for the rest of her life.

“There is one thing I have learned over the years,” she said. “And that is there will always be people out there who are willing to do anything to destroy what you have. You can’t let them have the satisfaction of doing that.”

During her career, Brickman says that she has enjoyed a lot of great moments and experienced some great moments she will never forget, but she says that there are two moments that stand out as her favorite.

“There are a couple of moments throughout my career that have been big for me,” she stated. “My favorite team moment would have to be when we won regionals by 40 strokes this season. Personally, placing fourth as an individual would be the best.”

Audra Smalley, Kingfisher golf coach, says that Katey is great person and teammate.

“Katey is such a great kid with a big heart,” Smalley said. “She is an awesome teammate and is always willing to go the extra mile for the team. She is a hard worker and is an excellent representative of our team.”
