OFFENSE

With seven starters returning for the Okeene Whippets, coach Reese Brickman is looking forward to competing at a high level in 2022 and hopes to make a run into the Class B playoffs. The Whippets return several upperclassmen from last year’s team and bring in a solid group of freshmen that could make an impact on the field when given the chance. Dual-threat quarterback Brody Jinkens (6- 0, 175, Jr.) will command the offense following a sophomore campaign in which he accounted for 17 total touchdowns. William Karbs (5-8, 185, Jr.) leads the backfield and has speed to break away from defenders but would rather lower his shoulder and punish them. Last season he rushed for 1,133 yards and 15 touchdowns. His younger brother, Harley Karbs, is an underclassman and is expected to get some looks in the backfield this season along with Kale Shaloy (6-0, 185, Sr.). Kyle Lewis (5-7, 215, Jr.) is the man in the middle at center, but can also play guard, and has started nearly every game over the past two seasons. Carson Osterhout (5-11, 150, Sr.) is a multifaceted receiving threat and can play outside or at tight end. Expect the Whippets to be in single tight end formations with a read zone philosophy.

DEFENSE

The Whippets return six starters on defense, many of which are two-way starters, and want to play aggressively out of their base 3-2 scheme. “We look to be a very aggressive defense with good techniques and energy,” Brickman said. “We’re going to swarm the football, improve our open field tackling, and look to force turnovers.” Karbs is a two-way star and had 110 tackles, two sacks, and two fumble recoveries as a linebacker in his sophomore season. Fellow linebacker Osterhout had 54 tackles of his own, an interception, and one score. Two-way starters Shaloy and Jenkins will look to lead the secondary after combining for over 70 tackles last season. Together they’ll look to limit big plays over the top. Hunter Morrison (5-10, 170, Sr.) had 45 tackles last year and looks to have a great final season for the Whippets bringing pressure from the defensive end. Also look for Reiley Luckie (Jr.) and underclassman Kyle Lewis to make an impact.
