Fairview’s Sydney Martens – FFA spotlight – presented by farm credit of enid

Current junior at Fairview High School, Sydney Martens is involved in many activities including Student Council, basketball, track, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, National Honor Society and FFA. Martens works hard to find time for all of her activities. Being a member of the FFA chapter at Fairview High School started in the eighth grade, but the year before, Martens had the opportunity to participate in a contest and she was hooked from then on.

“Although I technically got started in FFA my 8th grade year, I had the opportunity to go to a speech contest my seventh grade year in Enid, and that was my first FFA experience. I was really encouraged to join by my Ag teachers and parents, but I had always known I wanted to be in FFA just like my older cousin was,” said Martens. “I think the thing I have enjoyed the most about Fairview FFA is continually being encouraged and pushed to continue to better myself, whether that’s in speeches or just in life. Our Ag teachers and my fellow officers and I have had such a fun time planning events and getting to know each other.”

Martens has been involved in many different activities while serving in the FFA at Fairview.

“Throughout the years, I have been involved in speeches, Agricultural Communications CDE, Opening Ceremonies, and Greenhand Quiz. However, this past year I was able to give a Plant Science Speech, compete in the Ag Comm proficiency and CDE, and the State Convention Social Media Team,” said Martens. “I think FFA is a great organization to belong to because it has so many diverse opportunities within it. Unless you are purposely trying not to, you will always be able to find something that you are interested in or want to be better at.”

Martens, like her peers at Fairview, has collected some great memories in FFA, but one stands out for Martens.

“My favorite FFA memory is officer retreat, right before my sophomore year. I was elected Chapter Historian and the whole team took a trip down to Lake Texhoma, where we rented a house and had an eventful few days. After spending one day on the lake and going out to eat, we all sat outside around the pool while one of our advisors, Mr. Curry, told funny, yet slightly creepy, ghost stories,” said Martens.

Upon graduating from Fairview, Martens plans to attend college at Oklahoma State University and major in International Business with a double minor in Marketing and Spanish. This summer Martens said she will work at Kidd Drug and Gift, go to BASIC (an OASC camp), being a counselor at Kids Camp, take a college class, and spend a lot of time in the gym working on basketball.
