OFFENSE

Coming off a great 2021 season and trip to the second round playoffs in Class A, the Fairview Yellowjackets return a boatload of talent, and look to have an even better season in 2022.  Quarterback, Jax Bernard (5- 11, 175, So.), leads the uptempo spread attack after starting all season as a freshman. “He can make every throw as an incoming sophomore,” coach Bernard said. “He will be a bigger part of the run game this year and does not get rattled under pressure.”  Blake Perez (6-0, 190, Sr.) has led the Yellowjackets in rushing since his freshman year and brings good speed and power to the backfield. A trio of pass catchers Isaiah Burris (5-7, 160, Jr.), Reed Martens (6-3, 175, Jr.), and Mika Wheeler (5-9, 160, So.) all return and provide unique skillets on offense. Martens, who dealt with a broken wrist and collarbone as an underclassman, is looking forward to a productive and healthy junior season. With great size and length, he will be a red zone threat that can create mismatch opportunities from  anywhere on the field.

DEFENSE

The Yellowjackets return nine starters to their aggressive 3-4 attacking defense. “We want our kids to play fast and run to the football,” Bernard said. “We’ll be aggressive in the front seven and play man in the secondary.” Austin Houk (6-2, 210, Sr.) is more than capable as a blocking tight end with soft hands-on offense, but truly shines on defense from the defensive edge. Houk’s size and speed allows him to shut down an opponent’s rushing attack by sealing the edge and shrinking the field. Teagan Gilchrist (5-10, 175, Jr.) and Perez will contain the middle of the field or bring pressure from their linebacking positions. Kaden Pettus (6-4, 240, Sr.) is the defensive anchor and a vocal leader on both the offensive and defensive fronts. Bryce Ramay (5-11, 170, Jr.) and Burris will appear as defensive backs looking to force turnovers and limit big plays over the top.
