Burlington High School’s Alyssa Russell first joined the FFA chapter when she was in the eighth grade. It was her mother who wanted her to join and be part of every activity she could. Russell has enjoyed her time in FFA and said she would recommend other students look into becoming a member.
“I enjoyed the Environmental Science and Natural Resources CDE the most because it was something I did as a team with my friends. We studied, traveled, and competed as a team in a contest all of us enjoyed,” said Russell. “For a new FFA member, I would suggest exploring. Try multiple CDEs, present a speech even if you think it’s not for you, and show an animal at least once. You will find your niche.”
Her involvement in the FFA chapter was not limited to environmental science. Taking a page from her own book, Russell was involved in many activities throughout her time at Burlington High School.
“Not only am I involved in the Environmental Science and Natural Resources CDE but I also helped run a Tower Garden for our chapter and then taught the eighth graders how to care for it so they might take the project after I graduate,” said Russell. “It made me get out of my comfort zone. In my early years, I gave a speech, recited the creed, tried out multiple CDEs, and raised chickens to try and find what suited me best for the FFA. During my senior year, I found my favorite CDE and I still raise chickens to this day. While I didn’t keep doing speech, at least I knew it wasn’t for me, which is better than not trying it at all.”
Once she has walked the stage and graduated, Russell is looking forward to entering college and starting a new chapter in her life.
“After high school, I plan to attend Southwestern Oklahoma State University for six years in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy,” said Russell.
The senior was also involved in robotics at Burlington and served as president of the robotics team during her junior and senior years.
During her free time, Russell said she enjoys reading and writing short stories.
“I also find joy in story-oriented video games, action movies, and music,” said Russell.
