Crescent’s Calen Cox is following family tradition.
Cox, like her mom and her mom’s siblings, has been heavily involved with FFA since the eighth grade.
“My mom and her siblings were all very active in FFA while they were in high school, so when I was old enough they encouraged me to join,” Cox said. “I immediately fell in love with the association and have continued to be heavily involved ever since.”
Cox, who is the Vice President of the Crescent chapter, has been involved with a number of activities while in FFA, but she most enjoys being in a leadership role. She spent the past summer attending the Washington Leadership Conference in Washington D.C. where she was active with over FFA members from all across the U.S., including over 100 from Oklahoma.
“We learned how to lead our chapters, and because I serve Crescent FFA as the Vice President, I have carried out many of the qualities through the year,” she said.
FFA has taught Cox many skills that she will continue to use after she graduates, including work ethic, time management and leadership skills.
“I think carrying these three qualities will help me succeed successfully in life after graduation,” she said.”
Cox, who is the senior class Vice President and also plays forward for the Lady Tigers’ basketball team, has been a part of three state championships and a pair of academic state titles as a member of the cheerleading squad. She also competes in track and field in the 4×100 and 4×200 meter relays as well as the high jump. Crescent won state titles in both the 4×100 and 4×200 last year. Cox is a member of the School and Community Partnership class through FCCLA.
“My favorite memory would be winning the 4×200 at the 2022 state track championship,” Cox said. “All year we had been the underdog in that race, but we competed that final time with so much grit and pulled out the win.”
Cox plans on attending Oklahoma State University and majoring in Food Science. She then wants to attend medical school out of state and become an orthopedic surgeon.
“Being active in sports most of my life has made me extremely interested in the human body, and I hope to make a career out of it,” she said.
Free time doesn’t come often for Cox, but when it does, she enjoys reading and hanging out with friends from other schools.
