Enid’s Coach of the Month: Wade Rogers – Presented By Rick’s Pharmacy

Wade Rogers coached four tennis state qualifiers and has been selected as Enid

High School Coach of the Month.

Rogers, who has coached tennis since 2017 when he coached at Sequoyah Middle School in Edmond and has also coached wrestling since 2009, guided Haley Hibbets (No. 1 Singles), Alexa Garcia (No. 2 Singles), and duo Sage Haffner and Kenzie Stotts (No. 2 Doubles) to the 2023 Class 6A State Tournament in May.

Hibbets went on to finish third at state after defeating Edmond Memorial’s

Lauren Krise in the third-place match, and Garcia was a state runner-up who defeated Bishop Kelley’s Audrey Brown in the semifinals.

“The most rewarding part of coaching is watching the athletes become more mature and responsible over time, and maybe as a coach you helped with that” Rogers said.

Rogers, who also teaches Oklahoma History at Enid High School, says there were two major influences, one being his father, to help him get his start in coaching.

“I would say I have two. Steve Dunlap who was my JH coach. He taught me a lot of discipline and gave me a good work ethic. The second would be my father, Jim Rogers. He was the first wrestling coach for the UCO Bronchos (Central State back then) when they re-started the program in 1972. He gave me the foundational ideals about coaching.”

Aside from wanting the best from his athletes when it comes to competition, Rogers wants to see personal growth.

“Hopefully, they will be more responsible young adults, and appreciate the time they had in high school,” he said. “Also, to have the ability to continue their own personal growth after graduating.”
