Oklahoma National Guard recruiter Staff Sergeant Pablo Garcia is from Goodwell, Oklahoma. If you’re not familiar with Goodwell, it is located between Guymon and Texhoma in the Oklahoma panhandle. Today, SSG Garcia is a recruiter covering the same areas as well as certain schools in Texas.
“I have assigned schools that I visit throughout the year. My area goes from Seiling to Felt in Oklahoma. I also visit some Texas panhandle schools,” said SSG Garcia.
When SSG Garcia first enlisted, he was working as an 11B or Infantryman.
“Weapons squad,” said SSG Garcia. “Best job there is!”
During his time with the National Guard, SSG Garcia has spent time overseas on a deployment.
“I have been given the opportunity to travel all over the United States and did a deployment to Afghanistan. My career has definitely been adventurous. This small town country boy from Oklahoma has been all over the world for free. All thanks to the Oklahoma National Guard,” said SSG Garcia.
Finding reasons to join the National Guard is easy for SSG Garcia. Especially if you are looking for a way to pay for college.
“I enjoy helping people with their life goals and changing lives,” said SSG Garcia. “It’s a very flexible career. A student can serve and continue his or her education at the same time. National Guard education benefits are the best offered by any branch of service. Some students attend college free of charge due to all the benefits provided by the Guard.”
As a new recruit, you come into the process with a hundred questions. Two that SSG Garcia hears all the time are, “how long do I serve?” and “how much money does the Guard give?”
“Most contracts are 6×2 which would total eight years,” SSG Garcia said. “The Guard waives tuition to any higher education institution funded by the state. Anyone who enlists also qualifies for the Montgomery GI Bill, which gives them extra money each month for being a fulltime college student.”
