Alva High School senior Jarin Shirley is a member of the varsity golf team and the FFA chapter at Alva. The graduate has spent several years in the golf team and working as a team manager for the football team.
“I have played golf for three years. My parents encouraged me to join because golf is a sport I can play all through life,” said Shirley. “I was also an Alva Goldbug football team manager for four years.”
This year Shirley said this was one of her best years on the course and she seen improvements in her game.
As a member of the FFA chapter, Shirley said she has been involved in many activities over the years.
“I first got involved in FFA in eighth grade. Although I have been around FFA members and knew I wanted to join someday since elementary school,” said Shirley. “Through FFA I show hogs, participate in the agronomy CDE contest, and attend many leadership conferences with my chapter.”
Spending time with other FFA members is a highlight for Shirley.
“I have enjoyed spending time with the members of my chapter and making new friends,” said Shirley.
Shirley said the FFA is a great place to set goals for yourself.
“I would tell someone who wants to join FFA to work hard towards your goals and not let anyone hold you back.”
Now that she has graduated, Shirley plans to attend Oklahoma State University majoring in pre-veterinary animal science. She also enjoys hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors or with her livestock.
