Even though Fairview High School’s Laynie Gosney is new to high school, she is not new to the FFA chapter. The freshman joined the FFA chapter when she was given the first opportunity in middle school.
“Having a preschool teacher whose husband was an ag teacher sparked my interest in FFA early. In the Fall of my eighth-grade year, I was able to take an ag class which meant I could join FFA. My preschool teacher, Mrs. McGolden would read books about agriculture, take us on field trips to the County Fair, also to farmers’ fields to explore and learn about agriculture. She told me how much I would love being a part of FFA. She encouraged me to give speeches and go to competitions. She continues to encourage me as well as mentor me,” said Gosney.
As a member, Gosney said she has enjoyed giving speeches, participating in the green hand quizzes, opening and closing ceremonies as well as completing in food science CDE.
“I do not show animals, but that is one of the many attributes of FFA. It has so many opportunities for students to explore. I enjoy all of it! However, I would have to say my favorite part is having the opportunity to meet new people across the state and build friendships that will last a lifetime,” said Gosney.
Also a member of the softball team, basketball team, track team and the FCA, Gosney said her teammates are the best.
“My teammates are the best! We encourage each other, share in the individual successes, have fun, and build friendships. Softball is a team sport that allows each player to develop their own set of skills. I enjoy the competitive spirit and teamwork needed to be successful,” said Gosney.
