Derek Daugherty

COVINGTON-DOUGLAS WILDCATS

BOYS

Coach: Kenny Daugherty

22-23 Record: 14-13

With a dozen seasons under his belt at the helm of the Covington-Douglas basketball program, coach Kenny Daugherty still brings the same level of excitement as he did in year one. Coach Daugherty has good reason to be excited this season. “We bring back four starters and seven of my top eight from last year’s team as well as a move in and a freshman that look to contribute this year. We will be long and athletic and will try to use that to our advantage.

The experience we gained from Class A playoffs last year and our tough schedule this year will hopefully help in a long playoff run in Class B this year,” said Daugherty. Two big-time scorers are back including Derrek Daugherty (6-2, Sr.) and Ford Smith (6-2, Jr.). Daugherty, a VYPE Top 100 nominee, averaged 12 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 3.0 blocked shots a game, while Smith accounted for 12 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 2.0 steals a game. Their production is crucial for the Wildcats. But don’t overlook Miguel Tarango (5-7, Jr.) at guard. Tarango can dish the ball and play with quickness. Last season he averaged 5.0 points with 4.0 assists per game. Kade Griffin (6-0, Sr.), and Camden Thayer (5-8, Jr.) are dependable players that shore up the lineup for coach Daugherty. Griffin recorded 4.0 points with 2.0 rebounds, while Thayer went for 2.0 points, 3.0 steals, and 3.0 rebounds each night. Another player to watch is Conner Vandiver (6-3, Sr.) at forward. Vandiver managed 3.0 points and 2.0 rebounds a game. Also look for Justice Hooten (5-6, Jr.), Justus Halcomb (6-1, Fr.), Cody Flamm (5-8, So.), Cooper Wheeler (6-2, So.), Joe Sharp (5-10, Fr.), Dakota Berryhill (5-11, Fr.), Aiden Talley (5-8, Fr.), Grayson Marler (5-9, Fr.), Houston Robinson (5-8, So.), and Micah Chartier (6-0, So.).
