Enid High School senior Maddux Mayberry grew up at the David Allen Memorial Ballpark. His Dad, Bill Mayberry, is the Director of the Ballpark that opened in August, 1999. It has hosted many outstanding events including the National Junior College Division II World Series.
In the summers growing up, Maddux remembers spending more time at the ballpark than at home. He even called it his second home. His Dad may feel the same way!
Maddux reflected with me on his four years at Enid High School. He played all three sports until his freshman year and decided to focus on football and baseball. His favorite is whatever sport he is playing at the time. Maddux did see the value in having some down time to hunt, fish, recycle and work on things he needed to improve.
Maddux served on the Principal Advisory Committee during his sophomore and junior years with Principal Dudley Darrow. Maddux will graduate with honors this spring. He mentioned his sister Mandy always kept an eye on his academics throughout high school.
Maddux was a wide receiver for the Plainsmen football team his senior season. He talked about head coach Rashaun Woods changing the game for him with film sessions and helping him understand the position better so he could be better. Maddux was a pitcher and outfielder for the Plainsmen baseball team. He talked about head coach Brad Gore teaching him so much during bull pens and pitching meetings. He said Coach Gore has a great relationship with his players.
Mayberry is going to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M this fall to play both football and baseball and major in business. He hopes to someday own a business. It is a big challenge to play two sports at the next level. Maddux understands it is a huge commitment. He must get bigger, stronger and better to compete in junior college. He has worked hard to achieve his opportunity to pursue the next level and will take his strong work ethic to NEO in July.
Memories! Maddux talked about the Enid Astros and Steve Goeke being good for us and good to us in little league baseball. Every Sunday after church they would practice if they weren’t playing. Maddux talked about cherishing competing every day in high school and being in the locker room with teammates and friends. The support of his family is really special to him. He thinks his family never missed a game.
It will be interesting to follow Maddux Mayberry at the next level. His work ethic and desire to compete creates many good opportunities in sports and in life.
