Enid’s Oswaldo Herrera – Athlete Spotlight – Presented By NBC Bank

Oswaldo Herrera, 17, is a junior at Enid High School. He started playing soccer because he called it a “family tradition”.

“Ozzie” plays forward for the Plainsmen. Coach Cabada calls Herrera a “dynamic player” that could be one of the best in the state. He had a disappointing junior season with two hamstring injuries this year. He had a break-out year his sophomore year and dedicated himself to the weight room and getting better. Coach Cabada called him a good leader that leads by example.

I asked him about his favorite subject. He replied, English. I asked why and he replied it’s not as difficult as math. Who is his favorite teacher? He didn’t name a favorite teacher but he likes teachers that are not rude and help you understand yet make you get the work done.

I asked one of my favorite questions, what advice do you have for a young person entering high school? He thought about it. He talked about working hard and never giving up. He mentioned not to be sacred and to stay on top of your school work.
Ozzie wants to play in college. Where, it’s too soon to know. He knows he has to get bigger, stronger and faster. He seems dedicated to do that.

His coach put it best. Ozzie has a high soccer IQ and understands his potential. Look forward to seeing that play out in his senior season with the Plainsmen soccer program.
