Garber High School senior Leila Washington could be considered a veteran basketball player. Having played the sport for 8 years, she started playing in junior high. When on the court, Leila plays the positions of guard and forward for the Lady Wolverines.
In terms of what motivates Leila, as well as who is Leila’s biggest role model, she looks toward a family member for both. “The person that motivates me, and is my biggest role model is my mom, because she does a lot for me and my siblings.”
Most students have a teacher that they hold special in their heart, and has had a big impact on their life. Asked who the teacher Leila considers having the biggest impact on her life, she stated, “Mrs. Sloat, my English teacher, had the biggest impact on me, because she pushed me to become a better student. She also believed in me, that I could do well.”
A memory that stands out the most to Leila thus far during her athletic career involved getting an injury. Leila recalled, “A memory that sticks out for me the most happened when I tore my ACL. Instead of having to quit playing basketball, I came back, and came back stronger.”
When asked what it means to Leila to represent her school and her community when she plays, Leila did not hesitate to explain. “It is a combination of sportsmanship, teamwork, and having fun with my teammates.”
Besides being a basketball player for the Lady Wolverines, Leila is involved in other extracurricular activities at Garber High School. Leila stated, “I am a member of the National Honor Society, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, as well as being a member of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.”
After graduating from Garber High School, Leila plans on pursuing higher education. Leila stated. “After graduation from Garber High School, I plan on going to college. I would also like to play sports at the next level, and obtain a degree in sports medicine.”
