OBA’s Trey Johnson – Teacher of the Month

By Derrick Smith

Teachers play a large role in the lives of their students. They not only teach students the subject of choice, but they also can be a role model and an influence for them to look up to. Trey Johnson is a teacher at Oklahoma Bible Academy and says that he chose to become a teacher because of teachers he had as a student. “In my life, I had some amazing teachers that helped shape me into the person that I am today,” he said. “As a teacher, I just want to have that same opportunity to be that for my students. Teaching is such a rewarding job and I am thankful to be able to make an impact.”

Johnson is happily married and the couple is expecting their first child in November. Along with teaching, Trey also enjoys cooking for his family and friends. He loves to do any kind of cooking, from baking to barbecue.

This is Johnson’s first year as a teacher. He teaches sixth grade math and also Introduction to computers. While he enjoys teaching the subjects that he teaches, he also enjoys another aspect of being a teacher. “I love that I get to interact daily with the future leaders of our country,” he said. “Being able to be an influence on the next generation is not only an honor, but it is also a big responsibility. And one I don’t take lightly.”

Throughout his life, Trey has been given a lot of different kinds of advice. Whether it was as a high school student or as a new teacher, he says that all the advice was taken to heart. But there is one piece of advice that he was given by a veteran teacher to help Johnson as he began his career. “The best piece of advice that I have been given would have to be to take it one day at a time,” he said. “Do not get overwhelmed with thoughts of next week. Just worry about the here and now.”
