WATONGA EAGLES
Coach: CLINT BENWAY
2-7
OFFENSE
Sophomore quarterback Tristan Dobbins (6-2, 185) and junior offensive linemen Jackson Chapman (5-10, 230) and Dayson Cash (5-10, 190) will be key components for Watonga’s offense in 2023 under first-year head coach Clint Benway. The Eagles, who will use a multiple I-formation, return just four starters from 2022. “We will keep it between the tackles and shorten the game,” Benway said of his offensive philosophy. “We will be young but looking forward to gaining some good experience with our underclassmen,” Benway said. “We have some good hardworking kids and are excited to compete in a tough district.” Benway is looking for big things from Dobbins behind center. “Started both ways as a freshman. Offensively, has a knack for picking up tough yards and runs hard,” he said.
DEFENSE
The Eagles will return four starters on the defensive side of the ball in 2023. Tristan Dobbins will be a key piece on defense as well filling in at one of the linebacker positions. “Plays hard and runs to the ball well on defense,” Benway said. Ayden Perez (6-0, 160, So.), Ivan Carmona (5-10, 155, Jr.) and Rylan Miller (5-10, 150, Sr.) will operate from the secondary. Jackson Chapman (5-10, 230, Jr.) will anchor the defensive line from the nose guard position. Watonga will use a base 3-4 and play fast and physical. Assistant coaches under Benway include Andrew Park, Tommy Kidwell, Trenn Smith and Thomas Lazny.
