OFFENSE

Installing a new offense and defense is never an east task but for head coach Len Halliburton it’s still an exciting time to be a Tiger. “We had a very productive spring installing the new offense and defense. We are very excited about the upcoming season,” said Halliburton. Five starters are back on offense including Carson Martinez (5-9, 175, Sr.) at quarterback. Martinez has good arm strength and great accuracy. His high football IQ and his athleticism is what makes this Tiger offense go. Jairo Ponce (5-11, 210, Jr.) and Javier Gonzalez (5-9, 195, Sr.) are two running backs the Tigers will lean on this season for a lot of carries and tough yards. Offensive coordinator James Henton has installed a spread offense with a fast tempo. Guys like Ponce and Gonzalez will fit right in. The offensive line features Jalen Vargas (5-11, 260, Sr.) at center with Michael Medina (6-1, 240, Sr.) and Ian Landes (6-2, 265, Jr.) at the tackle spots. Overall, there is plenty to be excited about coming into the new season with a fresh look on Tiger football.

DEFENSE

One of the more athletic players on the team will start at safety. Isais Sanchez (6-2, 185, Jr.) is an explosive player who makes difficult plays look easy. Garrett Barbosa (6-2, 190, Sr.) is another safety the Tigers will need to play big this season. In a pass-happy league their play could dictate the defenses success. Medina will start at defensive end giving the team someone who can pressure the quarterback from the edge. Ponce will start at inside linebacker while Christian Luna (6-0, 195, Jr.) will start at outside linebacker. The pair make for a great one-two punch. The Tigers will utilize a 4-3 defense, keeping the scheme simple. Defensive coordinator Chad Foster wants his players to react and swarm to the football. Other members of the coaching staff include Jake Martinez, Nathan Leithead, Lisimba Young and Brit Litsch.
