Alva’s Mattie Pettus – athlete spotlight presented by Farm Credit Western Oklahoma

Since the eighth grade, Mattie Pettus of Alva High School has taken part in her local FFA chapter and is now an officer serving her school and the chapter.

“I always wanted to be in FFA, but the FFA officers my seventh-grade year encouraged me to join,” said Pettus. “In my FFA chapter I am currently the vice president and am involved in livestock showing, prepared public speaking, livestock judging, and agronomy. I plan on getting my state degree this year and running for state FFA office.”

As busy as she is, Pettus said she still loves showing animals and meeting new people- two activities the FFA can provide a student like Pettus.

“One of the things I enjoy most in FFA is making new friends. Everywhere you go, you will find someone that is also in FFA with whom you have something in common. It’s really easy to click with those people and become friends for life,” said Pettus.

Away from FFA, Pettus is involved in Key Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, National Honor Society, and the Business Professions of America organization. Pettus plans to graduate from Alva High School and pursue a degree at a state school.

“I plan to graduate with honors this year and attend Oklahoma State University to major in Plant and Soils Sciences,” said Pettus.

Pettus said she loves serving her community as well and is part of many activities around the Alva community.

“My community has done so much for me, and I love having the opportunity to give back. Starting my freshman year, I was always asked to do community service activities. I feel that getting underclassmen involved is important.,” said Pettus. “I love how supportive my community is. They are always willing to help our schools and students in any endeavor. I feel it is important to serve the community in order to thank them for all that they do. I also want my community to be the best it can be and serving and volunteering helps improve our town.”
