OFFENSE
Veteran head coach Dave Foster is the new man in charge at Alva. This will be Foster’s 25th season as a head coach with stops along the way at Elk City, Dodge City, KS, Ness City, KS and Haven, KS. Foster will be hitting the hallways trying to bump up the numbers for the Goldbugs. Foster has the benefit of a senior laden offensive line, always a good place to start. Logan Nusser, Payden Nusser, Chris Carpenter and Dalton Marteney all have size and experience as blockers. Foster will have the benefit of two quarterbacks that have seen varsity action. Senior Kaden Slater was injured and replaced by sophomore Daylon Malone. Foster feels either player is capable of leading the offense. Junior Drake Wharton is the fastest of all the Goldbugs and can be used either as a running back or wide receiver. Aiden Faison is coming off a very productive summer and should factor into the equation at running back. Senior tight end Sylus Graves has good hands and is also an excellent blocking addition to the returning foundation up front. Expect to see quite a bit of shotgun formation and an up-tempo approach to the offense.
DEFENSE
Foster will look to his defense to carry the team through the early part of the season. The Goldbugs will operate out of a 4-man front with Logan and Payden Nuser along with Marteney manning those down positions. Graves will occupy the edge at end. Carpenter returns at linebacker and has the ability to play multiple positions. Speed is present in the secondary with Wharton and junior Drew Glass playing key roles. Glass is dependable and consistent in his approach. Foster inherits a staff that have all spent time in Alva, including defensive coordinator Marcus Mead, a standout former player. Ryne Wilson, Derrick Thomas and Dalton Beeler round out the coaching staff. The Goldbugs won a combined four games in 2019 and 2020 but went 12-2 as recently as 2017. The season opener against Kingfisher will be double tough. The schedule seems a bit more manageable after that.
