OFFENSE

After a good look at the team during spring ball, head coach Dave Foster is looking forward to getting this team on the field and seeing what they are capable of accomplishing this season. “Our returning experience will be at the majority of skill positions with key holes up front on both sides of the ball as well as quarterback,” said Foster. “Spring ball gave us a great look at the growth of our returning players in the offseason.” Running back Drake Wharton (6-0, 175, Sr.) is one of those players returning for the Goldbugs. Wharton rushed for 838 yards on 133 carries and scored eight touchdowns last season. He also added 293 yards receiving with three scores. A trio of wide receivers dot the lineup this season. Weston Tucker (6-2, 170, Sr.), Phillip Randall (6-2, 170, Sr.) and Daylon Malone (6-0, 180, Jr.) will give opposing defensive coordinators nightmares. Tucker accounted for 463 yards and five scores while Randall had 202 yards and Malone finished the season with 289 yards through the air. The offensive line features Allie Pollock (6-3, 235, Jr.). Look for Alva to run the spread offense and to take whatever the defense is giving.

DEFENSE

Malone will go both ways this season seeing time in the defensive secondary where he had 38 tackles and one interception last year. Drew Glass (5-9, 165, Sr.) joins Malone in pass coverage after making 20 tackles and grabbing an interception of his own. Most teams tend to stay away from Glass in coverage. Lantz Mathers (6-0, 205, So.) had an amazing 111 tackles as a freshman and forced five fumbles. His play can set the tone for this defense. Also look for Aiden Faison (6-0, 175, Sr.) at linebacker and Hunter Miller (6-5, 215, Sr.) at defensive end. Faison grabbed 50 tackles last year while Miller made 47. Both love to play on the other side of the line-of scrimmage.
