Just about every athlete that has competed in sports has dealt with a rough patch during their career. No matter how long or difficult the tough time is, it is important that they are able to work through it and overcome it. Shaylee Cline plays softball and basketball for Beaver High School. She says that whenever she experiences those moments, she has a plan on how to handle it.
“I have two things I tell myself whenever I start to get down when I’m pitching,” she said. “One is the Bible verse Luke 10:19 that has gotten me all through this season and the other is a quote by Patty Gasso that I heard her say in an interview. That is ‘Pressure is a privilege.’ It’s a privilege to play this game, it’s a privilege to play with these people, it’s a privilege to represent, it’s a privilege to be healthy, and it’s a Privilege to be a Lady Duster.”
There have been a few people that have made an impact on Cline’s life and helped shape her into the person she is today and will be in the future.
“One of my biggest role models is Zoe Weaver,” she said. “She graduated from Beaver a couple years ago, she was an incredible athlete who overcame injury, and was always sweet to everyone around her including younger kids. She also had very strong faith in God. Another would be my history teacher Mrs. Jinger Looper. She is an amazing teacher and was a great coach. I played for her in sixth grade and I was having a hard time and she gave me a note that said “You were born to pitch.” It was a few words, but they kept me going through that season and I’ve never doubted myself like that on the mound again.”
Along with her sports, Shaylee is also involved in the Business Professionals of America, Family Career Community Leaders of America, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes,. She is also on the yearbook and media team, and the Girls Athletics student council representative.
