Sports are a big part of most students’ high school years. If they do not participate in sports, they are usually at a game or sporting event cheering on their classmates to victory. It is a way to share their school spirit. Parents, like Nikki Johnston see sports as more than just something to be involved in. She says it helps get kids ready for their future.
“I believe there is nothing that prepares you for life as sports do,” Johnston said. “Sports teaches you about teamwork, selflessness, perseverance, how to handle failure and success, and how to push yourself past what you think you are capable of.”
Nikki and her husband Barry live in Garber and have three kids who were or are involved in athletics. Kyra and Liam have already graduated from high school. Kyra was a competitive dancer and Liam played football and basketball.
“Aidan is a senior at Garber,” she said. “He is a starter on the basketball team, and he has had a lot of college interest. He is looking to commit once the basketball season is over.”
Nikki serves as the Director of Wound Care at St. Mary’s Hospital in Enid. She says that a lot of her free time is taken up by sports.
“It’s a year-round activity for us and there is nothing I love more than to watch my children doing what they love,” she said. “I try to be as involved as I can. I always volunteer my time to help in any way. Whether it’s providing food for the team, working concessions, giving rides, or cheering on everyone from the stands, you will always see us there. We never miss a game. Recently my husband and I have also been traveling with Aidan to do college visits.”
A strong community is the sign of a strong school system, and Johnston says that Garber is a perfect fit for her family.
“Garber has been the best decision we ever made for Aidan,” she stated. “He has thrived here. Not just in sports but also academically. The support that Garber shows is incredible. I’ve never seen so many families, even without athletes that play, who travel to every game no matter the distance. We are definitely a proud Wolverine family.”
