OFFENSE
There are times in life when things just do not fall your way. Sports is no different as the Hennessey Eagles can tell you. They barely missed out on making the playoffs, but they enter this season ready to secure a spot in the postseason. “We tied for fourth place in our district last year,” said third year head coach Paul Hix. “But we missed out on the playoffs because of a tiebreaker. We return most of our skill players this season. This group has won more games every year since breaking on the scene as freshmen. We expect to contend for a playoff spot in our district.” Dual-threat quarterback Sebastian Gonzalez (6-0, 190, Sr.) is back after passing for 1,642 yards and rushing for 113 yards and totaling twenty- one touchdowns. He will be a leader in this offensive unit. They also bring back a trio of receivers that will make things difficult for the opponent’s secondary. Seth Simunek (6-0, 180, Sr.), Weston Smith (5-11,160, Jr.), and Kevin Trillo (5-9, 150, So.) combined for 1,278 receiving yards and fourteen touchdowns last season. Another weapon for Gonzalez will be tight end Langston Smith (6-1, 205, Sr.). He had seventeen catches for 283 yards and four scores. He will look to be an impact player for the Eagles this season.
DEFENSE
On the defensive side of the ball, the Eagles will work hard to get pressure on the opposing quarterback and confuse the opponent by mixing their coverages. They will be led by linebacker Jessin Hardin (5-9, 170, So.), who totaled fifty-three tackles and two sacks last year. Taking care of things in the secondary will be Brandon Mendoza (5- 10, 165, Sr.). Last year he had forty-five tackles and one sack but will work to increase those numbers this season. Joining him in the secondary will be Simunek, Smith, and Trillo. Assistant coaches for the Eagles this season are Evan Sprayberry, Paul Raupe, David Redus, Chris Rapp, and Korey Walker.
