OFFENSE
When change occurs within a program, you can expect a few bumps in the road. Those bumps are the focus for head coach Kelly Husted and the staff at Waukomis. “A new coaching staff takes over so with that comes growing pains,” said Husted. “Quarterback position will have a big say in our success. Attitudes and work ethic have been outstanding throughout the summer pride workouts.” Ricky Woodruff (5-8, 150, Jr.) is one of the leaders of the team and will start at tight end for coach Husted in the double-tight I-formation. Line play is crucial as well with Tyler Vanover (6-5, 200, Jr.) playing one of the guard spots and Joe Luckett (5-10, 185, Sr.) playing opposite Vanover up front. The new offensive scheme for the Chiefs is geared towards the type of players coach Husted has on his roster. “My philosophy of offense caters to the type of kids we have. We’ll try to remain as balanced as much as possible.”
DEFENSE
Woodruff will go both ways like many of his teammates as he locks down one of the corner positions. Vanover will start at defensive end where his size and length will come into play. Another end to watch is Jaxon Burchardt (6-0, 170, Jr.). Like Vanover, Burchardt can get up field and be the disrupter the team needs. Also putting the pressure on up the middle is nose guard Joe Luckett. Luckett brings his senior leadership to both lines and will be a crucial piece of the puzzle for coach Husted. The Chiefs will base in a 3-1 defense and live by the motto of, “don’t let the offense score!”
