Brynn Custar is a runner on the Woodward High School cross country and track teams. She enjoys competing against other athletes from across the state, but she says that there is another aspect of being a high school athlete that she enjoys more.
“A highlight moment in my career has been being able to influence the younger grades and be an example that even if you are not the strongest athlete to begin with, you can become a worthy competitor with time and practice.”
Custar is a junior at Woodward. She is also a member of the Future Farmers of America and the National Honor Society.
It takes a lot in order to be a successful runner and Custar knows that while it is not easy, it makes her a stronger runner.
“Resilience running is not for the weak of heart,” she said. “We compete in a sport that is everyone else’s punishment and in it, we have to be able to push through the pain to truly be able to compete. The biggest motivation for me is to make those around me proud.”
While running is usually considered an individual sport, Brynn says that she has some outstanding teammates alongside her.
“The opponent I enjoy beating the most as well as working with the most is my teammate, Avery,” she stated. “We both have extremely competitive natures and with that it has allowed both of us to grow not only as people but as athletes and a team. I think the least appreciated runner on our team would be my little brother Dathan. He is so talented and driven that he puts our efforts to shame that being said I love getting to watch everything he has been able to accomplish throughout this year.”
Her school and community have been there for her a lot during her competitors, and Brynn says that has not gone unnoticed.
“My community has supported me so much throughout my childhood,” she said. “And when I’m out competing whether it be running or competing in an FFA event, I want to do my best to show that the support shown to me has not been wasted or taken for granted.”
