Guymon’s Austin Jacobs – FFA Spotlight – presented by farm credit western Oklahoma

Austin Jacobs started his senior year knowing he would be busy with many other activities, but for the first time while in high school, he was able to join FFA.

“This is my first year to be involved in FFA. I have grown up involved in agriculture, but this was the first time it worked into my school schedule,” said Jacobs. “I have always had a deep interest rooted in agriculture. I have learned many of its aspects from my Grandpa.  The first time I met Mr. Zach Ilbery, my FFA advisor, I knew I had to make a change in my school schedule. His enthusiasm for his program was contagious.”

Jacobs jumped in with both feet and decided to be part of as many different programs as FFA has to offer.

“This year, I have been excited to be involved in all the programs available. I am involved in the FFA Shooting Team, livestock judging, public speaking, and currently I am showing three hogs,” said Jacobs. “I really enjoy the outlet and the ability to be involved in many different areas in FFA. Currently, I am spending most of my time preparing my three hogs for shows. I believe everyone can find something that will fit them through FFA.”

At Guymon High School, Jacobs has other interests as well including student council and band.

“As a very active senior at Guymon High School, I am currently serving as senior class president as well as president of National Honor Society. My involvements also include head drum major and a trumpet player for the Pride of the Panhandle Band as well as member of STUCO,” said Jacobs. “My sophomore year, I began my journey with the Early College High School partnership between Guymon High School and Oklahoma Panhandle State University. In May 2021, I will graduate with an Associate degree in Agriculture from Oklahoma Panhandle State University.”

With Associates degree in hand, Jacobs plans to continue his college education and pursue a career in Veterinary Medicine.

“After graduation, I will complete my Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from Oklahoma Panhandle State University. Upon completion of my undergraduate studies, I plan to attend Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine,” said Jacobs.

In his free time, Jacobs goes to work on the farm tending to his animals.

“The free time I have, I enjoy being involved in agriculture. I have a small cattle herd that I tend to as well as my show hogs. I also enjoy spending time with my family, as well as helping work on my grandparents’ farm,” said Jacobs.
