Guymon’s Christopher Barriga – Athlete Spotlight Presented First National Bank Of Hooker

By Scott Metz

Guymon High School junior Christopher Barriga plays soccer for the Guymon Tigers. As a center back for the Guymon Tigers, Christoper acts as the last line of defense for his soccer team. With this comes the brunt of the responsibility of trying to assure that goals are not scored by the opponent. Christopher is definitely a soccer veteran having played the sport his entire life, starting as a young child.

Christopher has a sense of pride to represent his team, and the community of Guymon, Christopher stated, “It means the world to me to let our school be showcased, and show everyone how great we are.”

Asked who his favorite teacher was, Christopher did not hesitate to answer. Christopher stated, “I would say my favorite teacher is Mrs. Anderson from 3rd grade. Because of her, I continuously pushed myself in school to get better grades.”

Most high school student athletes have a favorite professional athlete they look up to. For Christopher, this athlete is a professional soccer player. Christopher stated, “My favorite professional athlete is Cristiano Ronaldo. Ever since I was little, I watched his games. He is simply the best soccer player in the world. Every time I am on the soccer field, he motivates me every time to keep pushing to reach my dreams. He makes me want to become great like him.”

When it comes to getting satisfaction from beating a rival school, Christopher stated, “I would say my favorite team to beat is El Reno, because they are just a fun team to play.”

In addition to his classes and playing soccer, Christopher stated, “I am involved with North West Alliance, here in Oklahoma.”

After graduating from high school, Christopher is considering two different options. Christopher explained, “If I received any scholarships, I would take one, and hopefully go on to play soccer in college. If I did not obtain a scholarship, I would pursue welding and just work.”
