Hooker High School’s Omar Gomez – Athlete Spotlight – Presented By First National Bank of Hooker

A basketball guard’s speed and quickness for dribbling, passing, and shooting on offense is essential.

For Hooker High School junior Omar Gomez, this responsibility comes easy. As a guard, Omar is also tasked with defending the perimeter of the court on defense.

One could consider Omar a veteran at the sport, having played basketball since fourth grade. Omar estimates he’s played in about 70 games in his basketball career.

Asked what his favorite part about basketball is, Omar enthusiastically stated, “For me it’s just the passion and love I have for this sport. I love the life lessons the sport gives you, and I also like playing with my friends. I really like shooting the ball and dribbling.”

In terms of a favorite memory during his basketball career, thus far, Omar exuded, “My favorite memory of basketball is playing in the Big House. It’s been a dream of mine since I was a kid.”

Behind every student athlete is someone that has inspired them the most. For Omar, he looks toward family for that inspiration. Omar proclaimed, “My mom and dad, they push me to be the best of my ability. They inspire me by their work ethic that they have. “

When Omar was asked about a favorite NCAA or professional sports athlete he likes, Omar unequivocally replied, “I took to The University of Oklahoma’s Bijan Cortes. I have been watching him since he was playing in high school at Kingfisher.”

Academics are important to Omar. In regards to his favorite subject, Omar proclaimed, “My favorite subject is math. I like math because it is a challenge. it makes you think and problem solve for solutions.”

After high school, Omar has ambitions to pursue higher education. Omar explained, “I plan to go to college and attend either Southwestern Oklahoma State University or the University of Central Oklahoma, and major in computer science, after graduating from Hooker High School.”

Besides basketball, Omar plays other sports. Omar stated, “I am involved in track, cross country and football.”

It’s clear that Omar has a bright future ahead of him.
