Kaitlyn Gilchrist was involved in the 4-H Club before she decided to become a member of FFA in the eighth grade.
“I knew from a young age that I wanted to be a part of FFA because I witnessed both of my older siblings being a part of all that FFA has to offer,” said Gilchrist. “My family really paved the way for me. It was always a dream of mine to be in FFA just like my brother Caleb and sister Miranda. Though the real inspiration came from my dad and mom. They were both active in FFA and received their state FFA degrees.”
Gilchrist has enjoyed all aspects of FFA from showing livestock to meeting new people.
“My favorite part has been showing cattle and meeting new people at stock shows. The group of people you show with become your family. They are very important to you and become lifelong friends,” said Gilchrist.
During her time in FFA, Gilchrist has held an office within the chapter every year. As a freshman she was the Reporter, her sophomore year she was Secretary, as a junior and senior she has served as chapter President.
Gilchrist has been involved in livestock showing for many years. She started showing cattle (heifers) in the third grade.
“My latest show projects included a percentage Charolais heifer, a Maintainer heifer, and a Chiannia heifer,” said Gilchrist.
But there is more to FFA than just showing livestock and Gilchrist wanted to make sure everyone is aware of all the activities a chapter member can do.
“FFA is not all about showing and exhibiting livestock. You don’t have to come from a farming or ranching background to get involved and learn, grow and be competitive. FFA offers something for everyone to do and be a part of a great organization. There are many speech, public speaking, leadership and other opportunities,” said Gilchrist.
One of her favorite memories in FFA came during the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana.
“I got to spend several days with great group of people and see FFA on a larger stage and scale. My time spent in the show barn runs a close race to this,” said Gilchrist.
Upon graduating from Seiling High School, Gilchrist plans to attend Oklahoma State University where she will major in Farm and Ranch Management. In her free time, Gilchrist enjoys riding horses and spending time with friends and family.
