Woodward Football Preview: Offense – Presented by AAA Woodward

Head coach – Rick Luetjen

2021: 3-7

The Woodward Boomers are making a move this season, from Class 5A to 4A. Head coach Rick Luetjen is excited about the move and ready to see what his team does this season because he feels like there is a lot of potential on his squad. “I am really excited as I head into my fourth year here at Woodward,” the coach said. “We have a total of eighteen returning starters that have played at some point, on either offense or defense, during the last season. I am also thrilled about the move to Class 4A because I feel like our numbers will be a better fit.” The Boomers bring a run-first mentality, no matter what formation they are in. Quarterback Sam Cheap (5-11, 170, Sr.) will run the offense on the field. He will have some experience in front of him on the offensive line. Left tackle Hunter Harrison (6-1, 235, Sr.), center Layten Phillips (6-1, 230, Sr.), and right guard Drake Clavillas (5-11, 245, Sr.) will work hard to protect Cheap and keep him upright. The quarterback will also have a couple of outstanding skill players on the outside to get the ball to. Wide receiver Taelen Laird (6-4, 190, Sr.) will be a key player in the offense, while tight end Luis Corral (5-10, 215, Sr.) looks to play a bigger role, both as a run blocker and a receiver.
