Woodward’s Jamie Harmon-Golf Spotlight-Presented by State Farm Kevin Cansler

Jamie Harmon admits she’s a bit of a sports junkie.
“I love all sports! Whether it be golf to softball, track to shooting sports and tennis to baseball, it doesn’t matter. That is what is on our TV at home 90% of the time,” Harmon said. “It does not matter to me that my child is not involved in that certain sport, I still love to watch and cheer them on. I remember a few years ago, sitting through an entire football game in the pouring down rain and my daughter wasn’t even cheering. I was there to support the other athletics.
Harmon is the proud mother of Woodward High School sophomore softball player Madison Harmon. She and her “partner in crime,” Chad Harmon, have been married 16 years.
Supporting the Boomers comes in all shapes and sizes.
“Buying raffle tickets, sponsoring a sign, working concession stands and over all just being a part of their lives,” Harmon said. “I have learned that just being present means more to not only my kid, but many of them that I have had the pleasure of getting to know over the years.”
Harmon played softball, basketball and ran track for Woodward (Class of 1994) and grew up shooting shotguns with her father, a pastime she has since passed to her daughter. Chad Harmon played football, basketball and baseball and ran track. Neither pursued collegiate athletic careers, but both are still active and can often be found playing a round of 18 together on Boiling Springs Golf Course, after which the loser is awarded household chores.

“Sports play a major role in the day-to-day life. It might be watching the best team on the planet, the Oklahoma Sooners, play football or softball on TV or in person, but we tend to do it together. We are all super competitive and hate to lose, which is a blessing and curse,” Harmon said. “My husband and I have coached multiple sports since Madison was young and have met many kids, most now young adults, along the way. They are all special to me, but there are those few that will always have a lasting impressions on my life. Those few are the reason I know I should be doing exactly what I am doing.”
In raising an athletic daughter, Harmon hopes she has instilled values like discipline, responsibility, time management and passion through sports.
“I have always told her to never do anything part way. Always go in full force and don’t give up,” Harmon said. “From the sports she has played and we have coached, she has also made life-long friendships. Learning how to juggle school, work, sports and social life is a life skill that is vital in today’s busy world.”
From her, Harmon hopes Madison learns to live in the moment.
“I really hope she has learned to cherish each experience and always be in the moment, Harmon said. “I try to catch the special moments as often as I can but as long as my presence is there, that is what matters to her.”
