There can be any number of reasons that a person chooses the career they decide to pursue. For some it can be because they love the field they are going into, while others do it for the money or the recognition. Christina Fisher decided to be a teacher because she wanted to follow in the footsteps of her family.
“I am a third generation teacher,” Fisher stated. “My grandmother held a lifetime teaching certificate from Oklahoma State University before it was Oklahoma State University. She taught in a one room schoolhouse near Freedom, Oklahoma. My mom and dad were both teachers and taught in Oklahoma and Kansas. I tried to be anything but a teacher, because I know how difficult this job can be. But teaching called to me and I couldn’t say no. It is my passion. My heart is for these kids and I love what I get the privilege to do everyday.”
Christian teaches fifth grade Social Studies at Woodward Middle School North, where she has taught for seven years.
There are some perks that come with being an educator. For Fisher, seeing her students from past years is a real treat.
“I love what I do,” she said. “I love seeing students grow and change. When they have that spark and realize they love what we are learning about. When former students stop by and say hi or I get to teach a former student’s child and we reconnect as adults.”
Over the years, Christina has received her fair share of advice from other educators. There is one that stands out as her favorite.
“Love your students and sometimes the students that need the most love will ask for it in the most unloving ways. Love them anyway.”
When she is not teaching in the classroom, Christina enjoys spending time with her husband of 27 years, Phil and their four children and two bonus children. She also enjoys traveling, reading, watching movies, and being with friends and family.
