Kaleigh Mills was destined, both by her natural aptitude and her family history, to be a Woodward High School multi-sport extraordinaire.
“The first ever sport I played was soccer, and I was age 4,” Mills recounted. “I then started playing T-Ball at age 5 and played with a little team from Laverne, because there was not a team in Woodward to play on. I then started basketball at age 6 and always played up with older girls through little league ball!”
Mills plays all three sports to this day. Sports were “pretty much the only thing on TV” at her house. Her mother played basketball and softball. Her father played football, baseball and basketball and won a 2A state championship on the hardwood.
“They pushed me in all three, but I would probably say it would be softball [most]. My dad coached my softball team ‘till I started traveling in 14U.” Mills plays for the Enid Bruins and considers softball her No. 1 sport at this stage in her athletic career.
Mills’ dream has always been to play soccer at Oklahoma State, but she would be excited for the opportunity to play at any Division I school. Her parents have supported her dreams to play at the collegiate level from the beginning.
“They have always pushed me to be the best I could be and wanted me to be better,” Mills said.
“They take me across the country to play anywhere and drive across-state to practice or pitching lessons in the city every week. Any time I want to go to the cages, the field or court, they go and make sure I work for the dream I have wanted ever since I was a little girl.”
Mills’ goals for the remainder of this year include finishing the basketball season strong and having a strong freshman year for the soccer team and help the Boomers back to the state championship game.
“By the end of this school year, I would also want to increase my pitching speed to low 60s,” Mills said.
