Woodward’s Avery Williams – athlete spotlight – presented by great plains bank

By Derrick Smith

Success is what we all strive for in our lives. We want to be the best and reach all the goals we have set for our lives. And when we reach our goals and get to where we want to be, there is no better feeling. Avery Williams says that her favorite sports memory was when she reached the goal she has set for herself.

“The biggest moment of my career happened at the state track meet my sophomore year,” she recalled. “I was able to make it to the podium in the 100 meter hurdles. It was a great feeling knowing that my hard work had paid off.”

Williams is a senior at Woodward High School. Along with track, she is also a member of the school’s soccer and baseball teams. She plays guard and post on the basketball court, while on the soccer team she is a right defender. She competes in 100m and 300m hurdles on the track team. Sports have been a part of her life for quite a few years. She has played basketball for eight years, track for six, and this is her first year to play soccer since she was young.

There have been people throughout her years of playing sports that have impacted Avery’s life. She says a former coach had a really big influence on her, both as an athlete and a person.

“Coach Kinzie Didier used to be my basketball coach,” she said. “She taught me so much about basketball, but even more about life and standing for what I believe in.”

Williams says that the success that she has enjoyed over her has happened because of the work and time she has put in. But she also adds that she has had a lot of support that has helped her along the way.

“It’s taken a lot for me to grow,” she said. “There is support and guidance from coaches, friends, and my mom as well as hard work to make me the person and athlete I am today.”

Along with her sports, Williams is also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, pep club, and Sub Debs.
