Entering his senior season at Turpin High School, Drew Batt is looking to make the most of every opportunity that comes his way this year. A member of the varsity football team, Batt said playing with this team and his teammates is one of the reasons he does not want it to end.
“I love that we are basically a family. I have played this game with the same guys since we could put a helmet on. These guys are my brothers,” said Batt. “I’m ready to hit the field but not ready to leave it. Some days it feels like a second home. I’m excited for senior year, but I don’t want to leave it behind.”
The team is ready to get the season started and for Batt, playing against one of their rivals will be a highlight.
“I’m looking forward to this entire season, but I can’t wait to beat Tyrone,” said Batt.
A multi-sport student-athlete, Batt will be adding other sports to his resume as a senior.
“I have played basketball and football since little league. This year I’m excited to add in powerlifting and golf,” said Batt.
The routine on gameday is simple, but post-game activities are all about replenishing and relaxing.
“First, I have to find the food after a game. Our moms supply a meal for us after home games. Second is a long hot shower and then lots of sleep. Then I wake up Saturday morning and watch film and college football with my mom,” said Batt. “My go-to pre-game meal is peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. My post game favorite meal is pizza or whatever the football moms get for us.”
Being part of the Turpin family is a special thing for Batt and his teammates. This offseason, they have spent more time together as a group, pushing each other to get better.
“The best thing about Turpin is growing up with the same kids since preschool. We have a small class size, so we are all really close. It makes school far more fun,” said Batt. “The whole team has put in a lot of work this summer with high attendance and improvements in the weight room. I’m proud of our line for getting a lot stronger and faster, I’m most impressed with Bailey Boyd. He’s coming back from an injury from last year and he has put in a lot of work to be ready for this season.”
Batt would like to continue playing football at the college level.
“I’m ready to see what God has for my future plans on and off the field,” said Batt.
The big man said his funniest moment on the field occurred when an opposing player looked across the line and said, “please don’t hurt me.”
