Enid’s Randy Johnson – Teacher of the Month – presented by rick’s pharmacy

By Ember McElrath

Enid Teacher of the Month Max Randy Johnson has been teaching since 1986. He started teaching first in Cushing Oklahoma for three years and then he has spent the last 32 years at Enid High School. Not only does he teach at Enid High School, but he also graduated from there. After graduating high school he went on to earn his bachelor degree at Phillips University, then from there went on to earn a master in music education from Southwest Oklahoma State University in Weatherford.

“In junior high school, Mr. Leon Jewel was my first influence that got me thinking about becoming a music teacher,” said Randy.

The past 35 years have been spent teaching vocal music and over the course of his teaching career he has not only been busy inside of his music room but outside of it as well. He spent five years assisting the Enid High School band, coaching tennis, sponsor for the pep club, as well as being a sports announcer for Enid Public Schools for the last 18 years.

“Teaching with my son and making music fun for students is my favorite thing I like about teaching,” said Randy.

What keeps this music teacher going each and every day is his students and family.

“My students’ enjoyment of music inspires me along with my family’s constant support and affirmation,” Randy said.

In Randy’s free time he enjoys going camping and snow skiing. Randy is married to his wife Jane and they have four wonderful kids together, Matthew, Mark, Michael, and Sarah. All of his children have graduated college and Matthew and Mark currently follow in their father’s footsteps and will be teaching vocal music next year at Enid High School.

Randy could not be more thrilled about receiving the Enid Teacher of the month recognition and has some hopes for the future of the award as well.

“I am honored to be teacher of the month and hope to see one of my sons receive this honor in the future,” said Randy.
