OBA’s Leigh Sandwick Teacher Spotlight Presented by Oklahoma Bible Academy

Leigh Sandwick’s decision to enter the education field was not something that she had expected to do. But she says that when the offer was placed before her, she knew inside that it was something she should do.

“My current headmaster offered me the opportunity to use my graduate degree in counseling and theology to teach a psychology course five years ago,” she said. “I fell in love with teaching. I have always liked teaching kids through Sunday school at church or at camps, but had not pursued an education degree in college. It is definitely something the Lord led me to, and I am so thankful he did. I think I saw a unique opportunity to use my education and passions to invest in the lives of students, and I wanted to be a part of that if I could.”

Sandwick currently teaches seventh grade Bible and sixth grade History at Oklahoma Bible Academy. She also has taught AP Psychology in the past.

As a student, Leigh says that there were a couple of instructors that were influential in her life and helped her become the teacher that she is today.

“I had two professors in graduate school who encouraged me in my gifts, and gave me opportunities to lead and teach other students,” she said. “They both challenged me academically in ways I hadn’t been challenged before, and helped prepare me for what God had planned for me in the future. I felt valued by them, and knew they believed in me. They both modeled a love for teaching as a means of investing in the lives of others, and I was really struck by that.”

Whenever she is not in the classroom, Leigh enjoys spending time with her family doing whatever they want to do.

“My husband and I are busy keeping up with our five kids, and so we spend as much time together as we can”, she said. “We are involved in our church, and I enjoy helping teach women’s Bible study there. I enjoy running, reading, cooking and knitting, and playing sports for fun with our kids. We like to travel and explore new places with our kids.”
