When Shay Skaggs joined the Pond Creek-Hunter High School FFA chapter, it was her older sister who pushed her in that direction. Skaggs decided to join and she has made the most of her four years with the program. For Skaggs, the opportunity to join FFA meant a new world of activities and friends would open up. 

“It has opened up so many new opportunities in the work force for me. Without FFA I wouldn’t have been pushed to get out of my comfort zone and been able to develop my social skills I have now, which I want to use for my future career,” said Skaggs. 

One reason for her success is the people in the program at Pond Creek-Hunter. Skaggs said thanks to their help and support, FFA has been a wonderful experience.

“I love the people FFA has surrounded me with. Just a great group of people that are always so supportive,” said Skaggs. 

There are several things about being involved in FFA that Skaggs enjoys, but being part of a chapter that pushes for new things is one big reason she loves being part of this group. 

“I’m very blessed that our chapter got trapshooting started, which is one of my favorites. I also have attended state and national chorus. Started lots of Community work within our chapter,” said Skaggs. 

Away from FFA, Skaggs is involved in many other activities at school.

“I am the STUCO secretary and Junior class president. I’m also active in numerous different sports,” said Skaggs. 

With another year of high school left to complete, Skaggs said she hopes to one day attend Oklahoma State University where she will pursue a degree in Agribusiness. 

Skaggs offers this advice to anyone looking into FFA.

“Just go for it! At first it may seem very scary, but in the end it is so worth it. You might say you could “never fit in” but I promise there are so many options that are perfect for each individual,” said Skaggs. 

In her free time you can find Skaggs working on the farm with her father, playing basketball and trapshooting.
