OFFENSE

The Covington-Douglas Wild- cats look to be a physically dominant team down in the trenches in 2022. The Wildcats bring back a strong and experienced offensive line along with tight end Derrek Daugherty (6-1, 235,Jr.) providing some additional blocking and pass catching relief. Last year, quarterback Ford Smith (6-1, 155, So.) had a solid freshman campaign, throwing for 1,825 yards, 23 touchdowns and only three interceptions. Coach Smith wants his team to run a spread offense and attack all parts of the field. Because the Wildcats have some veterans on the offensive line with size, Smith said he’d like to see his team run the ball a bit more than in the past. Gavin Hooten (5-9,150, Jr.), Camden Thayer (5-8,140, So.), and Jayc Hooten (5-10,200, Sr.) will all play a variety of offensive roles, and each is a capable playmaker in their own regard. Expect the Wildcats to find a balanced offensive at- tack but slow the game down when necessary and try to win the battle at the line of scrim- mage.

DEFENSE

An experienced bunch returns on defense for the Wildcats headlined by Austin Jordan (5- 11, 230, Sr.) and Mason Jordan (5-11, 235, Sr.) who appear as linemen on both offense and defense. The Jordan boys combined for over 130 tackles in 2021 and with another year under their belts, the two look forward to a productive 2022 season. Austin Kegin (5-11, 245, Jr.) and Cache Pierson (5-7, 165, So.) return as starters and Miguel Tarango and Kade Griffin are expected to compete for starting positions in the Wildcats’ 3-2 base defense.
