Hi, what are you looking for?

Woodward

Q&A with Woodward’s Angelica Martinez – Presented By The Wise Agency Inc.

VYPE: What are your goals for this season?

Angelica: We ended our competition season back in November, but my goal for this basketball season is to overall end off on a strong and happy note. I want to leave my senior year in cheer knowing I made an impact on the team and helped them work harder and feel comfortable on the squad.

VYPE: What has your sport taught you that you use in your daily life?

Angelica: Cheerleading has taught me to be out there and more social! I’ve made so many friends on the team that I never would have imagined myself talking to because of how different we are, but it works.

VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade and why?

Angelica: My favorite teacher has to be my government teacher, Mrs. Cruse. She is so kind-hearted, respectful, and understanding of all her students and makes her room such a comfortable environment. I’ve been lucky to have her for both regular history and AP gov.

VYPE: Who inspires you and why?

Angelica: Gilliam Rupert. She’s a cheerleader for Webster State and Team USA. I love her commitment to her team and the way she stays proud of herself throughout her mistakes.

VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?

Angelica: Bradley Holloway was a senior my junior year and is now graduated. Having an upperclassman like him on the team there to critique and help me on skills was nice since when I joined the team. I didn’t know anyone there that well and he definitely made practices a more comfortable environment.

VYPE: What is your favorite part about being on a team?

Angelica: My favorite part about being on a team is the bond we all form and just getting along with people I wouldn’t think I get along with. I love getting to have friends outside of my usual friend group.

VYPE: You can pick any place for a summer vacation, where do you go and who do you take with you?

Angelica: If I could go anywhere for a summer vacation I would go to Greece with my best friends, Nicole and Veronica.

VYPE: Why are you passionate about your sport?

Angelica: I’m passionate about my sport because I love what I do, I love learning new stunt and tumbling skills. It’s truly an adrenaline rush and the excitement that comes after. I know my hard work has paid off, but I also love being on the sideline and knowing there’s little girls out there watching me wanting to be cheerleader just like my teammates and I.

VYPE: Here is your chance to say hello, goodbye or thank you to anyone you wish.

Angelica:  I just want to say thank you for every coach I’ve had that’s gotten me to where I am today. I appreciate them more than I show it. I’ve been going to the Woodward All-Star gym since I was in elementary school and the coach (Natasha Turner) there is the reason I have the skills I have now. She truly built me as an athlete. My former high school coach, Rachel Beck, made me the high school cheerleader I am today. She’s the reason for my sharp motions and smile on the sideline. She pushed me to work through tough times in the best way possible. Taylor Applebee is my assistant coach but I appreciate the support she has continuously shown me throughout this last year.
