Alva’s Lakin Gaddy: A Story of Grit and Triumph in Athletics – Presented by Alva Recreation Complex

Lakin Gaddy is an Alva High School student who is the definition of tenacity and adaptability. She has made a lasting impact on her community with her academic and athletic accomplishments. Her path is not just one of achievement, but also one of tenacity and unshakable dedication to her passions.

“I play basketball, run cross country, compete in track and even swing clubs on the golf course,” Lakin said, showcasing her diverse sporting endeavors. Despite being a sprinter at heart, she embraces the challenges of cross country, facing off against some of Northwest Oklahoma’s most formidable runners to prepare for state-level competitions.

Competiton is a realm that Lakin thrives in, labeling herself as an opponent with grit.

“I’m probably the most competitive person you’ll ever find,” Lakin admitted. “Winning, for me, isn’t just about victory; it’s about not wanting to lose. It’s different.”

Her relentless pursuit of excellence stems from a deep-seated motivation to push herself beyond limits, a trait evident since her childhood days when she left her grandfather behind in a fun run to secure first place. This drive, coupled with her admiration for the Ladybugs basketball team, has fueled her aspirations and shaped her approach to sportsmanship and leadership.

“I’ve always admired the Ladybugs,” Lakin reflected, recalling the influential figures who shaped her sports career. “Players like Morgan Shiever and Jaden Hobbs made me feel like I was part of their success, and that’s what I want to pass on someday.”

In the classroom, Lakin finds solace in the guidance of Dr. Halah Simon. “Dr. Simon is the best,” she said. “She’s always there, not just as a teacher but as someone who genuinely cares. Her energy makes you want to be in class and be part of something great.” Lakin looks forward to having Dr Simon in the classroom, her senior year.

From early morning training sessions to late-night study sessions, she understands the importance of consistent effort in achieving her dreams. “Success doesn’t come easy,” Lakin said. “It’s about hard work, dedication and the relentless pursuit of improvement.”

Lakin’s journey is marked by notable achievements, including three-time All-State honors in cross country and track, as well as a state championship title in the 400 meters.

Looking ahead, Lakin aspires to attend a four-year university and pursue a collegiate athletic career. Beyond her academic pursuits, she harbors ambitions of attending dental school and contributing to the field of dentistry, inspired by her firsthand experiences and admiration for the profession.

With every stride on the track and every shot on the basketball court, Lakin Gaddy embodies the spirit of Alva High School. “When we step out on that court, we ARE Alva for 32 minutes. I take pride in representing each and every student and fan who has shown up to watch us play.”
