Cherokee’s Hunter Wimpee – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Northwest Technology Center

Northwest Technology Center offers a wide variety of programs to give high school students a head start on their future career. One of those students that is taking advantage of the programs is Hunter Wimpee of Cherokee High School.

“I am in the Computer and Business program at Northwest Tech,” Hunter said. “I really enjoy everything about tech. I felt welcome when I went and toured the tech in that class so I just felt like I belonged there.”

Wimpee is in his junior year at Cherokee. He is a member of the school’s football, basketball, baseball, and track teams.

No matter what sport he is competing in, Hunter knows that he is playing for more than himself whenever he puts on the school colors.
“I really think about working hard when I look at the word ‘Cherokee’ across my chest on my jersey,” he said. “I feel like I’m playing for the legacy of the school when I’m wearing the uniforms.”

There have been people that have had an impact on Hunter’s life and helped him become the player and person that he is today.

“My mom is probably my biggest motivator,” he stated. “And any time I step on the field or that court I know I’m playing for her. Dak Prescott is probably my biggest role model, and it’s because he gets so much hate and nobody thinks he is good enough for anything but he doesn’t let that bother him and he does great on and off the field.

When Wimpee and his teammates prepare to play, it does not matter who is on the schedule, they are ready to compete with anyone. But he has a couple of teams that he enjoys getting the win against.

“I really like it when we beat Timberlake or Burlington,” he said. “They are the other teams in our county and we really don’t like either of them.”

For anyone that is on the fence about attending Northwest Tech, Hunter has some advice.

“I would say if you’re willing to wait for it to get fun by all means do it. It just might take you a few months to actually see how fun it actually is.”
